Food Camps for Kids
Food is fun!
(Cedar Rapids, Iowa)- Matthew 25 is excited to announce that we are expanding our Food Camps for kids ages Kindergarten through 8th grade. “Each year, we have 5th graders who desperately don’t want to be phased out of the camps. This is the first year I can invite them to the Food Creators Camp, which is going to be an adventure, cook-off competition for middle school students,” said the Matthew 25 Youth Education Coordinator Tess Romanski.
Fun, informative, food education is a goal of Matthew 25. Camps are based out of the state’s first urban farm, a two acre space that challenges kids to Play With Their Food! Each camp has a different age-appropriate theme, and focuses on exposing kids to different food systems, exploring new foods, taking exciting field trips, and creating snacks from healthy food grown on the urban farm.
“My kids love that they were able to sample vegetables that they had not had the chance to try yet,” said Julie Wegmann, a 2016 Food Camp mother of two. “My kids really enjoyed the camp last year and look forward to participating again,” Wegmann said.

About Cultivate Hope, a program of Matthew 25:
Cultivate Hope exists to help build sustainable, healthy communities. The program focuses on teaching kids and families how to grow, eat and preserve fresh, high quality food right in their own neighborhoods. With the support of numerous volunteers, Mathew 25 created Iowa’s first urban farm education center in 2012. The two-acre farm is located close to downtown Cedar Rapids on empty lots that had houses before the 2008 flood. This once devastated area now produces food and helps build community on the Northwest side and in greater Cedar Rapids. Through Cultivate Hope, Matthew 25 has also established six school gardens at local schools and provides weekly garden related instruction.
