The Matthew 25 Music Mentoring program provides youth with the opportunity to learn how to play an instrument through a series of one-on-one music lessons taught by volunteer musicians. A strong musical education has been shown to improve areas of learning and academics, and it is a source of empowerment and self-expression. Students also learn about commitment and dedication as well as develop a greater sense of self. Upon program completion, they are rewarded with having mastered a musical instrument and finding a passion in musical performance. Students are not the only ones who gain from this experience; volunteers serve as music teachers and as mentors, providing students with a positive, supportive relationship that enriches the lives of the students.

The program runs on Saturday mornings at Taylor Elementary for children in fourth grade through early middle school. Students are provided with an instrument of their choice and lesson materials for that instrument, which will guide the student outside and during sessions with their volunteer instructors. Lessons are $1 each; students are asked to take ownership of their lessons and be active with an input of hard work and practice. With that, there is definitely a large component of fun with being in Music Mentoring; group lessons as well as group outings to performances and events give students a chance to socialize and learn together.

If you would like to help this program, donations of instruments (used or new) and other lesson materials (method books, music stands, etc.) are gladly accepted. We are also looking for volunteer instructors who would like to contribute their musical talents to teach our students! Please contact Nathan via email ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) or phone (362-2214) to get involved.
