Transform a home. Transform a life.
Make a big impact on a Cedar Rapids neighborhood during Transform Week. This annual event brings together community volunteers to complete projects that make our neighborhoods safer, healthier, and more attractive.

5th Annual Transform:
August 31 – September 4 and October 13 – 17
August 31 – September 4
With all of the recent storm damage and urgent needs caused by it, we’re planning to add derecho repair projects to the August 31 – September 4 Transform Week and move some of the regular Transform projects to the week of October 13 – 18.
For the derecho repair projects, we’re targeting low-income homeowners with damage that won’t be covered by insurance, and we’ll be taking applications for these projects August 23 – 28. Our aim is to be focused on projects such as repairing roofing and siding, replacement of broken windows, etc. For those volunteers who might not have construction-type experience, we will also have projects such as clearing of trees and removing debris from homes.
Volunteers should wear clothes that can get dirty (preferably long pants) and closed-toe shoes. Please also bring a water bottle as well as your own mask and work gloves. We will supply the necessary tools from our Tool Library, but we always encourage people to bring their own tools to help supplement ours. If you’d like to volunteer, please complete our online volunteer registration form.
October 13 – 17
During Transform Week, volunteers help homeowners in the Taylor and Time Check neighborhoods with home repair and maintenance projects that they aren’t able to complete on their own. Grants, donations and sponsorships allow Matthew 25 to do these home repairs at no cost to the homeowners.
Our volunteers help with a variety of projects, such as:
- Light construction or repairs to fix up areas on the inside of a home
- Window or door replacement
- Painting or siding the outside of a home
- Cleaning out debris or unwanted items from a home
- Building handicap accessible ramps
- Replacing the roof of a home or garage
- Planting trees or flowers in public areas in the neighborhood
- Fixing up or painting a local playground or public space
Project applications are now closed for the 2020 Transform Week. Please check back again towards the end of the year for more information about how to apply for next year’s Transform Week.
To help reduce the risks of exposure to COVID-19, we will be implementing the following precautions:
- Masks or face coverings are required for all volunteers and homeowners.
- Volunteers are requested to maintain social distancing of at least 6 ft.
- Lunch will be served at the project sites.
- Anyone who currently or within the past 14 days has experienced any symptoms associated with COVID-19 (such as fever, cough or shortness of breath) will not be allowed to volunteer.
- Anyone who may have been exposed to a confirmed or suspected case of COVID-19, or has been diagnosed with COVID-19 and is not yet cleared as non-contagious by their healthcare team, will not be allowed to volunteer.
We ask that all volunteers and homeowners self-monitor for signs and symptoms of COVID-19 and contact Matthew 25 if you experience symptoms of COVID-19 within 14 days after participating in Transform Week.
Work side-by-side with other volunteers in the community for a day or the entire week.
All skill levels are welcome—construction experience isn’t required. We’ll work to connect volunteers with projects that match their skill level and experience, and no one will be expected to do work that they are not comfortable with. If you do have DIY-level or higher skills, please indicate so on the volunteer registration form — this information is very helpful for us as we match people with projects and figure out how many complex projects we can take on.
We’re expecting between 300-400 volunteers throughout the week. We’ll provide tools and safety equipment for whatever task you take on. Most work days go from 8:30 – 3:30 with a break for lunch. Lunch and snacks are provided.
For more information, visit our Frequently Asked Questions page.
If you would like to volunteer for our 5th Annual Transform Week, please complete our volunteer registration form. If you’re bringing a group of volunteers, please have each member of your team register individually so that we have a record of emergency contact info, t-shirt size, etc.
Note that all volunteers will be required to sign a liability waiver and photo release. This is separate from the registration form. You can print the waiver and bring it with you or sign it when you arrive. Anyone under age 18 will need to have their waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian.
We rely on churches and community organizations to provide lunch for our volunteers each day. If your church or community organization would like to volunteer to prepare and serve lunch on one of the days of Transform, please contact us at 319-362-2214 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Sponsorships, grants, and donations allow us to do these home repairs at no cost to homeowners. We accept both monetary contributions as well as in-kind donations, such as building materials or snacks for our volunteers. Please contact us if your organization would like to become a sponsor or make a donation.
